Breast Cancer, Bills, and the Coronavirus

This single mother of three teenagers has a job she loves in food service at a senior retirement center, but it does not pay a living wage. She has been struggling for some time with her bills and expenses to feed her family.

In addition, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery to remove the lumps at the beginning of March. She was discharged from the hospital two days before the stay-at-home order began.

Because of her condition, she has a weakened immune system. She returned to work for a short time but was afraid of contracting the coronavirus in her weakened and compromised state. Because of this, she decided to take some time off to recover. That, along with the time she missed due to the surgery and general symptoms that limited her ability to work, has significantly cut into her income.

Beyond Housing has assisted with utility payments. Her Beyond Housing Resource Specialist has provided her with information on food distribution through Operation Food Search at the local library. Though she was able to secure rental assistance from BJC Cancer Center that brought her current through March, she is unable to pay rent moving forward. She and her children are in desperate need of help in the following weeks.
