Midwest BankCentre, Enterprise Bank & Trust Sponsor More Than $5.4 Million in Grants to Support Affordable Housing in St. Louis

Funds will revitalize neighborhoods and improve living conditions for 222 low-income households in North and South St. Louis County and South St. Louis City

St. Louis-based community banks Midwest BankCentre and Enterprise Bank & Trust have sponsored more than $5.4 million in grants for three St. Louis nonprofits from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) through its Competitive Affordable Housing Program (AHP). These funds will support affordable housing initiatives led by Beyond Housing, The Housing Partnership, and the Tower Grove Community Development Corporation, helping rehabilitate homes and rental properties for 222 low-income households across North and South St. Louis County and South St. Louis City, including those owned by seniors, individuals with disabilities, and immigrant families.

FHLB Des Moines is one of 11 regional banks that make up the Federal Home Loan Bank System. FHLBs provide funding solutions and liquidity to member banks to support mortgage lending, economic development, and affordable housing. Each year FHLB Des Moines reserves 10% of its net income to support affordable housing and invites its member banks to sponsor applications from nonprofits in their communities.

Midwest BankCentre and Enterprise Bank & Trust, as FHLB Des Moines member banks, successfully secured these affordable housing grants, which support the development, acquisition, or rehabilitation of housing for residents earning 80% or less of the area’s median income.

The impact of these efforts is significant. Midwest BankCentre secured $3.2 million in grants and Enterprise Bank & Trust sponsored $2 million. Since 2015, Midwest BankCentre has facilitated more than $18 million in FHLB Des Moines affordable housing grants for St. Louis nonprofits, improving living conditions for 841 low-income households. Enterprise Bank & Trust has sponsored more than $14.9 million since 2005, supporting 20 rental and home ownership projects in St. Louis.

“These grants aren’t just dollars and cents, they’re about people. They’re about neighbors helping neighbors build better lives. When a home gets a new roof or updated plumbing, it benefits the whole street and the entire community,” said Wes Burns, Executive Vice President, Community and Economic Development at Midwest BankCentre.

“Access to safe and affordable housing is life-changing,” added Monica Campbell, Vice President – Community Development Officer at Enterprise Bank & Trust. “These grants allow us to directly support families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities by funding essential home repairs. Strong housing leads to stronger communities, and we’re proud to be part of that solution.”

FHLB DES MOINES GRANT ALLOCATIONS

Beyond Housing ($3,999,920)

Beyond Housing received two grants totaling $3,999,920, sponsored by Midwest BankCentre and Enterprise Bank & Trust to fund home repairs for low-income residents, seniors, and individuals with disabilities in North St. Louis County, where decades of disinvestment have led to deteriorating housing conditions.

  • Midwest BankCentre-sponsored $1,999,920 grant will support repairs for 80 owner-occupied homes in Berkeley and Jennings.
  • Enterprise Bank & Trust-sponsored $2 million grant will fund repairs for 80 homes in Bel-Nor, Bel-Ridge, Beverly Hills, Greendale, Hanley Hills, Pagedale, Pasadena Park, Pine Lawn, Uplands Park, Vinita Park, and unincorporated areas of the Normandy School District.

Repairs will include roofing, HVAC systems, siding, windows, doors, gutters, waterproofing, concrete work, carpentry, electrical and plumbing upgrades, and accessibility, age-in-place, and energy efficiency modifications.  Beyond Housing will oversee both projects and provide homeowner empowerment services, including financial literacy education, budgeting, and counseling.

The Housing Partnership Home Repair Program ($1,209,600)

A Midwest BankCentre-sponsored $1,209,600 grant will fund the rehabilitation of 60 homes owned by seniors and individuals with disabilities in the Lemay, Affton, and Mehlville communities of South St. Louis County. Many of these homes pose significant safety and health risks and do not meet code requirements. Repairs will include roofing, siding, masonry, electrical and plumbing work, and accessibility improvements.

Tower Grove Community Development Corporation ($219,266)

A Midwest BankCentre-sponsored $219,266 grant will fund the renovation of a vacant multifamily building at 3772 Chippewa Street in South St. Louis City. Originally built in 1935, the Tower Grove Community Development Corporation will transform the building into two rental units—a three-bedroom and a four-bedroom—designed for immigrant families in collaboration with the International Institute of St. Louis. The renovation includes structural rehabilitation, ADA compliance, HVAC and electrical upgrades, and new interior finishes. One unit will be ADA-accessible.

COLLABORATIVE IMPACT

Through these grants, Midwest BankCentre and Enterprise Bank & Trust, in partnership with Beyond Housing, The Housing Partnership, and the Tower Grove Development Partnership, are making a strategic investment in community well-being. These initiatives provide safe, stable, and comfortable housing for low-income households, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, and immigrant families.

By addressing critical housing needs, these efforts strengthen neighborhoods, build community pride, and create a foundation for a more equitable St. Louis region. This collaboration shows the power of partnerships between financial institutions and local organizations in driving meaningful, long-term change.
