Washington University School of Medicine has recognized Beyond Housing, a comprehensive community development non-profit organization, with the 2016 Homer G. Phillips Lecture Series’ Founders Award. Over the years the Founders Award has recognized healthcare professionals, community agencies and non-profit organizations that have tirelessly worked to revitalize St. Louis neighborhoods.
The lecture series is named in honor of the historic Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, the premier training ground for African-American medical professionals. Washington University School of Medicine Associate Dean of Diversity, Dr. Will Ross says, “Over many years we have watched Beyond Housing create vibrant communities; one house, one neighborhood at a time. The economic impact has been remarkable, similar to the effect of the former Homer G. Phillips Hospital on the Ville neighborhood. St. Louis is a better place because of Beyond Housing and its leadership.”
Beyond Housing’s 24:1 Initiative is at the heart of its efforts to build thriving, strong communities in St. Louis. 24:1 represents the 24 municipalities in the Normandy School district working together as one. It strives to create programs to engage, strengthen and enhance these neighborhoods through improving home ownership, economic development and community resources.

Chris Krehmeyer accepted the award at the Homer G. Phillips Public Health Lecture Friday, October 21, at the Washington University School of Medicine’s Eric P. Newman Center.
