Two resident stories from Beyond Housing’s 50th Anniversary Celebration exemplify what’s possible when families have the opportunity to thrive
At Beyond Housing’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, the most powerful moments came not from the stage or the program, but from the people living the work every day. Two residents—Adrianna Hudson and Tawanna Gandy—shared their stories, offering a firsthand look at what becomes possible when individuals and families have access to stable housing and consistent support over time.
Adrianna Hudson’s journey with Beyond Housing began in 2014, at a time when she needed stability—a safe place to live and an opportunity to move forward. What she found was more than housing. Through Beyond Housing’s homeownership and savings programs, Adrianna began to build a plan for her future, developing the habits and confidence needed to take the next step.
Within five years, she transitioned from renter to homeowner in the same community. That shift represented more than a financial milestone—it marked a turning point in how she saw herself and her future. Today, Adrianna is a social worker and therapist, launching her own consulting practice. In her work, she sees every day how access to stable housing can shape outcomes.
As she shared during the event, “When housing is unstable, people are just trying to survive. But when it is, people can finally breathe, plan, and imagine a future.”
“Adrianna’s journey shows what can happen when stability is paired with opportunity,” said Beyond Housing Senior Director of Housing Cory Dickens. “Housing creates the space for people to pursue bigger goals and invest in their future.”
For Tawanna Gandy, the path looked different. Her family came to Beyond Housing more than 15 years ago during a difficult period marked by job loss, a growing household, and the need to rebuild. Living with extended family at the time, they were searching for a way forward.
Beyond Housing provided that next step—a home in Pagedale that offered not just shelter, but the space to reset and begin again. Over time, that home became the foundation for something much larger. With access to youth programs, financial education, and ongoing support, Tawanna’s family was able to create stability and build momentum year by year.
The impact of that support is evident today. One daughter is a college graduate, married, and building her career, while the other is thriving in high school and pursuing her passion for art. After 15 years, Tawanna and her family recently achieved a milestone that once felt out of reach: purchasing their first home.
Reflecting on that journey, Tawanna put it simply: “It literally changed the trajectory of our lives.”
While their timelines differ, Adrianna and Tawanna’s stories point to a shared truth. Stable housing is not an end goal—it is a starting point. When paired with holistic support, it creates the conditions for individuals and families to grow, to plan, and to build a more secure future.
“Stable housing is where the journey begins—but lasting success comes when families also have access to the tools, relationships, and opportunities that help them move forward,” said Dickens. “That’s how stronger futures are built.”
Beyond Housing’s commitment to supporting families in this way is not new—it has long been central to the organization’s work. What is evolving is how that support is delivered.
Today, Beyond Housing is building on that approach by focusing more intensively on families in its affordable rental homes—providing more coordinated, consistent support as they work toward economic mobility and, ultimately, homeownership. It’s a more focused way to do what has always worked: walking alongside families over time.
As Adrianna and Tawanna’s stories show, that kind of support doesn’t just change circumstances. It changes what’s possible.
