Beyond Housing’s inaugural Family Cohort gathers for its kickoff celebration
More than help
This past Saturday, families gathered with their children to celebrate the beginning of Beyond Housing’s inaugural Family Cohort—and the first step in a new approach to helping families build stronger futures.
The gathering marked the next chapter of an initiative introduced earlier this summer. The Family Cohort brings together a select group of residents for a deeper, more coordinated partnership centered on each family’s goals.
Beyond Housing Chief Transformation Officer Carrie Collins welcomed the families and led a presentation outlining what they can expect in the months ahead. Residents and their children listened with a sense of hope and anticipation as Collins described a journey that will include getting to know each family, developing an individualized plan and connecting participants with the people, resources and opportunities that can help them move forward.
The afternoon also made room for families simply to enjoy being together. Lunch was served, children had their faces painted and participants began getting acquainted with the people who will accompany them on the journey ahead.
The Family Cohort is grounded in an important distinction: Families are not simply looking for help. They are looking for a pathway.
The applications submitted by prospective participants make that clear. Although every family described its own circumstances and ambitions, several shared themes emerged.
Many families want greater financial stability—not necessarily wealth, but breathing room. They wrote about paying bills without panic, improving their credit, reducing debt and building savings for emergencies. They want to spend less time worrying about the next expense and more time enjoying life with their children.
Homeownership was another recurring aspiration. For many applicants, owning a home represents much more than property. It means stability, safety and the opportunity to leave something lasting for the next generation.
Families also expressed ambitions related to education, career advancement, technical training and entrepreneurship. Parents described wanting to earn degrees, enter healthcare careers, build businesses and find employment that provides greater security and more time with their children.
Underlying many of these goals was a desire to break generational cycles and show children a different future—one shaped by education, ownership, opportunity and sound financial habits.
The ambition is already there. What families say they need is a clearer route forward: practical knowledge, trusted relationships, accountability, coordinated resources and people who will continue walking with them when circumstances become difficult.
That is the pathway the Family Cohort is intended to provide.
For families already balancing work, children, debt and rising everyday expenses, however, a plan alone cannot remove every barrier. That is why the Cohort’s ability to connect long-term goals with meaningful, timely support will be so important.
One family. One plan. One team.
Life’s challenges rarely occur one at a time. Housing affects health. Transportation affects employment. Employment affects finances. Childcare affects education and career advancement. A setback in one area can quickly create obstacles in several others.
That is why the Family Cohort will not address each challenge in isolation.
Its “One Family. One Plan. One Team.” approach brings different forms of support together around the goals and circumstances of each participating family.
In the coming weeks, Beyond Housing staff will meet individually with participants, complete the enrollment process, and begin developing personalized family plans. Those plans will identify goals, potential opportunities, and the steps each family can take to make measurable progress.
Beyond Housing’s role is not to take that journey on a family’s behalf. It is to walk alongside them—providing encouragement and resources, helping participants navigate barriers, challenging them to keep moving and celebrating victories along the way.
Families, in turn, are being asked to keep showing up, remain open to learning and growth, and stay engaged in the process.
This is what transforms assistance into partnership—and hope into a plan.
The journey begins
Saturday’s kickoff was intentionally a celebration. It recognized the potential Beyond Housing sees in the participating families and the commitment those families have already demonstrated to themselves, their children and their futures.
It was also a reminder that meaningful progress does not happen all at once. It begins with one step, followed by another: meeting the team, building a plan, developing new skills, pursuing opportunities and growing together.
There will be challenges ahead. Families are balancing work, children, transportation, health concerns, financial pressures and the many unexpected demands of daily life. Progress will not always follow a straight line.
But no family will be expected to figure everything out alone.
The applications reveal families who are eager to move beyond getting by. They want stability, ownership, opportunity, peace of mind, and a stronger foundation for their children. They are not waiting for someone else to create their futures for them. They are ready to do the work—and they are looking for a pathway to turn their determination into lasting progress.
On Saturday, that journey officially began.
