THE HAWTHORNE SOCIETY is a premier giving society in St. Louis dedicated to creating a stronger, more equitable, and prosperous St. Louis—once and for all. Comprised of generous individuals, foundations, and corporations that make minimum gifts of $1,000 annually, the Hawthorne Society has been a driving force for change since its inception. Hawthorne Society members are bound by a shared belief that things can always change if enough people want them to and that investing in our under-resourced communities is vital for moving all of St. Louis forward.
In 1981, Beyond Housing leased its very first affordable rental home on the 1400 block of Hawthorne Place. That first family on Hawthorne Place had a stable and safe home to live in. This enabled them to take their first steps toward thriving instead of merely surviving, eventually purchasing a home of their own.
From that first residence, our work has grown and evolved in order to reverse decades of decline in North St. Louis County. Today, our holistic model addresses the many interrelated needs of both families and communities, including housing, education, health, economic development, municipal government, and more.
Membership in the Hawthorne Society is more than a donation—it’s an investment in creating a stronger St. Louis, once and for all.
We invite you to consider joining the Hawthorne Society through a minimum contribution of $1,000 per year and be a part of a growing group of individuals and organizations dedicated to creating lasting change. Benefits of membership include:

“I realized bringing people together and inspiring enthusiasm in them for a shared cause was more enjoyable to me.”
The new department is designed to remove the barriers imposed by systemic poverty to help low-income St. Louisans achieve economic mobility more effectively—strengthening under-resourced communities and also the greater St. Louis region.
