The fund development team at Beyond Housing recently added Michael Whitley as a gift officer. His unique background combines dual interests in psychology and accounting plus a solid understanding of the credit and mortgage industries with a deep belief in the power of opportunity.
“My career has centered on building meaningful relationships and connecting people with opportunities to make a difference,” Whitley said. “I’ve known about Beyond Housing for 10 or 12 years, and I’ve always respected the systemic approach. The areas that we touch in the holistic model all resonate with me, because I have seen how stable and affordable housing, educational opportunities, economic mobility, and strong community partnerships can create ripple effects that benefit generations.”

Before joining Beyond Housing, Whitley held fundraising leadership roles at the St. Louis Community Foundation, Maryville University, College Bound and the St. Louis Education Fund. Whitley’s early career included corporate roles as well as fundraising for the National Black MBA Association—first as a volunteer and later as a development associate. He also worked for his alma mater, Missouri State University, as it grew its presence among alumni in St. Louis, Chicago, and Atlanta. As a former member of the university’s baseball team, he remains passionate about investing in the wide variety of programs that support students’ academic success and well-being.
“Throughout my professional journey, I have been drawn to mission-driven organizations because I enjoy helping individuals and communities achieve lasting positive changes,” Whitley said. “Fundraising and donor engagement allow me to combine relationship-building, strategic thinking, and storytelling to connect generous partners and supporters with causes they care and are passionate about.”
Whitley acknowledged the many challenges currently facing community development organizations like Beyond Housing. “The nonprofit sector is navigating a particularly complex environment, with increased competition for philanthropic support, economic uncertainty, and evolving donor expectations,” he said. “I believe the best way to address these is through relationship-centered fundraising. By listening carefully to donors, sharing compelling stories of impact, demonstrating transparency, and clearly communicating outcomes, we can build trust and long-term partnerships.”
He looks forward to collaborating with his colleagues within Beyond Housing as they persevere around a shared vision, even through difficult times. “This work is not daunting when you’re giving people hope,” he explained.
Whitley is especially excited about the new Beyond Housing Academy, a three-year curriculum and personalized support experience focused on advancing economic mobility.
The Academy works with participating families living in Beyond Housing’s affordable rental homes, bringing greater structure, coordination, and continuity to the essential building blocks of economic mobility, including housing, health, education, personal finance, and employment. The first group of families began the Academy on July 18.
Dedicated Beyond Housing staff provide personalized coaching as each family identifies its strengths and needs, develops a personalized plan, builds knowledge and skills, and connects with relevant opportunities and resources. Regular one-on-one meetings provide time to review progress, address barriers, and adapt the plan as the family’s circumstances and priorities evolve.
“I appreciate that Beyond Housing works across multiple areas to support families rather than addressing challenges in isolation,” Whitley said.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join Beyond Housing and become a part of such a great team that is deeply committed to strengthening communities and expanding opportunities for families,” he added. “As I begin in this role, I am eager to learn from my colleagues, connect with supporters and donors, and then contribute to the organization’s continued success to keep good going for the next 50 years.”
