Beyond the Backpack Event Prepares Students and Families for a Successful School Year

Students, families, and members of the community are invited to attend a back-to-school community event on Saturday, August 10th from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Normandy High School in North St. Louis County.

The back-to-school event is sponsored by Beyond Housing and the Normandy Schools Collaborative in partnership with other organizations, volunteers, and corporate partners.

Each year, up to 3,000 backpacks filled with school supplies are handed out to students Pre K-12 to ensure that students and families have everything they need for a successful school year.  Basic needs items like school supplies can be very expensive and difficult to afford, which can present real challenges for students, families and teachers during the school year.

“Our staff, volunteers and partners work so hard to make this event successful,” said Chris Krehmeyer, President & CEO of Beyond Housing. “Helping families prepare for the first day of school sets the tone for the rest of the year. With the support of our volunteers, the district, community, and corporate partners, we are able to help make that happen.”

The event offers families living in the 24:1 Community everything they need for school in one place—free health and dental screenings, haircuts, backpacks, school supplies, resources, and family-friendly activities including a bounce house, Bubble Bus, free food, and more.

“This is an amazing way to start the school year,” said Dr. Charles J. Pearson, Normandy Superintendent of Schools. “Hats off to the 24:1, Beyond Housing, the city officials and all of our supporters. This is the type of collaboration that will help us continue to improve operational excellence fueled by community engagement.”
